Ever since legendary South African author Eve Palmer brought the farm Cranemere to life in her book the Plains of Camdeboo, the magic of the Great Karoo has captured the hearts of thousands. Her legacy lives on in Prickly Pears and Pomegranates by Bernadette La Roux and Marianne Palmer.
Moving prose by Bernadette Le Roux (Eve Palmer’s great niece and part-owner of Café Roux in Cape Town) captures the hardships and rewards of life – and food – in the semi-desert of the Great Karoo. Together with her mother, Marianne Palmer – Bernadette has woven farm recipes made from local, seasonal and organic ingredients into the book. Food is accessible and comforting and stirs up all the nostalgia relating to the Karoo.
