Spirit of Africa transports you to some of the continent’s last remaining wild places. This selection of powerful landscape, wildlife and people images, underpinned by evocative, sometimes poignant, personal anecdotes and hard-hitting conservation stories, reflect Scott’s deep connection with nature. Spirit of Africa is a call to the modern world to recognise that the protection of African wilderness is now more important than ever – not only for the preservation of biodiverse landscapes and endangered species, but also to fortify the human spirit.

‘The East has its temples, the West its cathedrals, but Africa has its wilderness. It is the sacred homeland of our species and the birthplace of the human spirit.

My photographic journeys have converted me into a disciple for the protection of Africa’s last wild places. I’ve discovered that conservation is not only about wildlife and landscapes. The world needs these places, now more than ever, because wild Africa can transform our hearts.’

• Extensive collection of fine-art imagery from Africa’s national parks and wilderness in countries including South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe.

About the Author

SCOTT RAMSAY is a photographer and writer who has spent the past twenty years exploring Africa’s wilderness areas, both independently and on commission for safari companies and influential conservation NGOs such as African Parks. For him, a personal connection to African wilderness is the antidote to the anxiety and strains brought upon us by the crushing pressures of uber-technological societies. With training in accounting, finance and journalism, Scott laboured in office jobs in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Washington DC and London before hearing the call of African wilderness, and immersing himself in the continent’s most beautiful places, with his camera and a pen. He is also a wilderness trails guide, and lives in a leopard’s territory alongside a wild river near Kruger National Park in the Lowveld of South Africa. This is his second book.
